Namaqua Flower Safari

25 - 30 August 2021 / 2 - 7 September 2021 / 25 - 30 September 2021
Namaqua Flower Safari 2021

“2020 was the best year for wildflowers in the last decade, and definitely a career-high for us (visiting the area for more than 30 years)”

Credit for this and our success in tracking them, boils down to the following:

  • Namaqualand was blessed with the correct amount of rain at the correct time.
  • Local knowledge – we have been visiting this area for the last 24+ years and we have the help and support of the local farmers.
  • Tracking the wildflowers on back roads and avoiding the normal tourist routes.

However, nobody can predict a good season we can only but plan for it! The critical factors being some rain during April with good follow up rain during the winter coupled with some local inside knowledge.

*NB – Please read our reservation requirements at the end of this mail to be part of this experience.

THE GAME PLAN FOR OUR 2021 WILDFLOWER SAFARI TO THE NORTHERN PART OF NAMAQUALAND IS AS FOLLOWS:

  • Starting our Wildflower Safari in Pofadder, we can track for flowers on the way to our destination, Die Houthoop Guest Farm, following back roads from Concordia, Okiep and Nababeep all the way to the Coast.
  • Our en-suite accommodation for 5 nights will be at Die Houthoop Guest Farm, not only will this offer the very best of Namaqua cuisine, but we are very well situated to travel daily on the hunt for the blooming wildflowers.
  • Wildflowers do not adhere to fixed time schedules and by using all the local knowledge we can obtain – we will plan our daily visits to the best area for the spectacular flowers of Namaqualand.
Namaqua Flower Safari 2021

All our sources in the Namaqualand region confirmed they do expect a late flower season in the Northern part of Namaqualand, this benefits us fantastically as we try to steer away from the very commercial areas that normally attract large numbers of tourists.

The area was hit by very harsh drought the last almost 5 years with some areas in “Boesmanland” not receiving any rain in 8 years! However, the picture is changing they had some rain backed up by good influx of moisture from the Atlantic Ocean resulting in some very good potential for flowers!

Our game plan for this Flower Safari to the Northern part of Namaqualand is as follows:

  • Starting the safari in Pofadder we can roam the greater Boesmanland on our way to Springbok hunting for flowers from Goodhouse and Concordia, to Okiep all the way to the coast.
  • Our accommodation for 5 nights will be at the Houthoop, not only will this offer the very best of Namaqua cuisine for our meals, but we are very well situated to travel daily on the hunt for the blooming wildflowers.
  • Wildflowers do not adhere to fixed time schedules and by using all the local knowledge we can obtain – we will daily plan our visit to the best area for the spectacular flowers of Namaqualand.
  • From the Houthoop and within radius of 2 hours we can cover all the “Hotspots” as well as the Coastal Area and a portion of the Richtersveld and the “Knersvlakte”. The perfect time to watch flowers is from 10 in the morning to 15h00 in the afternoon giving us more than ample time to scout for these natural beauties.
  • But please remember Namaqualand is much more than wildflowers – during our safari we will have ample time to explore the coast as well as the very rich copper mine and diamond history.
  • Our program will be relaxed with ample time to enjoy this unspoiled area and return refreshed.
  • Having dealt the with Houthoop for almost 25 years there is just no better place for true Namaqua hospitality – The cuisine as prepared by Jackie is out of this world (some even reckon they only come back for the food.) Since we do not camp and stay in one place, we can also offload the vehicles and travel light and uncomplicated.
  • This is not a 4×4 challenge – although you still will require the family 4×4 with low range for some of the routes!
