Namaqua Richtersveld

10 - 17 September 2021 / 20 - 27 September 2021 / 2 - 9 October 2021
Richtersveld Guided Tour 2021

This is a specialist safari into one of the very few and last true unspoilt areas in Southern Africa – The Richtersveld.

Our focus will be on the 4849 plant species, the rich history and the breath-taking landscapes. This is one of only 34 biodiversity hotspots worldwide– one of only two in a desert! Most definitely not a 4×4 challenge! however, you will still need the Family 4×4 with low range!

This World Heritage Site, the last refuse of the Nama who still embraces the 2000-year-old semi-nomadic livelihood, can only be described as Mountain Desert a place of rocks, plants and very rugged landscapes.

We join up with our old family friend Karel Du Toit, owner and founder of Pillansi Tours for the duration of the safari. Born and bred in Springbok, Karel is a world-renowned specialist on not only the succulents of the area but also on the rich history and is a true asset to the safari.

Wild camping is safe in the Richtersveld, this allowing us to roam and explore this still uninhabited area without the strain of a rigid tour itinerary – this leaving more than enough time to truly explore this rich cultural and botanical landscape.

So how does this work?

Our program will be very relaxed, however since this is a highly specialized safari we can only accommodate 6 vehicles. This adventure will start at The Houthoop Guest Farm (near Kleinsee) where you will not only be treated to some very special Namaqua cuisine prepared by Jackie, but we will brief you on the program for the next couple of days.

For the next 6 nights, we will be camping wild, exploring the true unspoilt back roads and OUTSIDE THE NP in the heart of the Richtersveld under the special guidance of Karel. We do not set out any fixed itinerary as our camp for the evening will only be determined by our daily progress. No early morning departures, no driving after 16h00, as it is then time to set up camp open our bush restaurant and this is where I come in play – you never trust a skinny chef… All our meals will be prepared around the campfire with breakfast/brunch, dinner and Piet’s famous “moer” coffee 24/7 from the campfire.

During our camp nights, we will be next to the Orange river for 2 nights and with names like Karels View, Sand Corner, Sunset Paradise or Inland, campsites will be totally wild and off the grid!

Places like Kuboes, Tierhoek, Bakkrans, Sukkel, Beesbank, Stinkfontein, Nababieps, and many more will form part of our route – Karel will introduce us to the “Halfmensboom” (Pachypodium namquanum) as well as many more unique species.
